Painting is an important component of the New Hermitage's collection. Many of its canvases are true masterpieces and "The New Hermitage" takes great pride in them. The collection of paintings illuminates the millstones of Russian art culture development from the reign of Peter the Great onwards, allows us to examine the origin and further development of genres and style movements in art of that period, describes the production of leading masters.
